The status of roof tile

Despite it very common occurrence in the Roman world, my research has suggested that roof tile is best treated as a very expensive commodity in its own right. As such the study of the long distance transport of this material has great, largely untapped, potential for examining ancient trading networks and their contexts. I am currently examining the evidence for the use of ceramic roof tile on low status rural sites.
