Analysis / Publication Report

Method

Normally the full method will have been set out in the post-excavation project design.
The recording method is based on a hierarchical fabric and form system. Within the ware groups fabric groups are classified by main inclusion type and given specific fabric codes.

Vessel types are defined by rim forms within each fabric group – with a coding system based on letter(s) denoting vessel function

The base level of recording for a stratified context is to record rims, handles  bases separately to individual fabric code level. Body sherds are recorded in groups by fabric, but seperated into subgroups defined by decoration type, sooting etc. . The rims are used to define the form function type. A record is made of No of sherds (Nosh), Weight (Wt), Minimum no of rims (MnR), rim equivalent (RE), Base Equivalent (BE), presence and types of sooting and other deposits, and any other comments.

The recorded material is then analysed by site and phase group. This data is presented in the sections outlined in the publication Synopsis
